Medfield gets revenge over Nipmuc to win Div. 3 girls soccer title

MILTON – Medfield can stop thinking now about its state final loss to Nipmuc from a year ago.

All the thoughts about how last season ended for the Warriors went away Saturday and were replaced with a victory Medfield will remember forever.

Top-seeded Medfield exacted revenge on No. 2 Nipmuc on the same stage and this time came away with the 1-0 decision – the result the Warriors lost by in 2024 – at Curry College’s Katz Field to cap a dominant season by claiming the Division 3 girls soccer state title.

“It was in my mind 24/7, every day, every week,” said Medfield All-American midfielder Sidney Heavey, as it was the Warriors’ first state title since 2012. “Just getting back on the field with this amazing group of girls is unbelievable to do it together.”

Medfield (22-1), which won its final 18 games, made sure the outcome was in its favor this time against Nipmuc (21-1-1) thanks to a goal from sophomore forward Devon Weafer and a sensational defensive performance.

Weafer put Medfield ahead in the 13th minute when Heavey made a long run down the right wing before making a perfect cross through the box to Weafer, who put her shot into the empty net for her seventh postseason goal.

“Every time Sid beats someone, dribbles down there, so I knew exactly where to be because she crosses it the same way,” Weafer said. “I just hit it in because I knew where she was going to pass it.”

Medfield’s defense made the goal stand up by holding off Nipmuc for the remainder of the game. Cate Tengler came close to netting the equalizer early in the first half, but her shot rang off the crossbar.

The back line of Stella Scobbo, Ava Kraus, Somer Higgins and Lyla Manning thwarted Nipmuc’s chances time and time again, while goalie Cate Rodenhi made two of her four saves in the final minutes to help Medfield snap Nipmuc’s 43-game unbeaten streak.

“Our offense has gotten a ton of press over the course of the year, but our back line is really its own fortress,” Medfield head coach Melinda Lohan.

Medfield finished the season outscoring its opponents by an eye-popping 123-16 margin, including a 29-2 mark in the tournament. And one of the most dominant seasons in state history couldn’t have ended any better for the Warriors.

“Knowing that we got back here against the same team, same score, just our way this year, it’s just unreal,” said senior captain Emily Hoffman.
