Toyota Nails The Land Cruiser Restomod Brief With a Tundra Heart at SEMA

Toyota has been rolling out SEMA builds, but this one hits different. The spotlight falls on a beautifully restrained 1985 Land Cruiser FJ60 that looks showroom fresh at first glance. Peek under the skin and you find a modern powertrain that turns this classic into a highway and trail sleeper without erasing its soul.

Here is the twist. Instead of the expected 250 series hybrid four, Toyota slipped in the twin turbo 3.4 liter V6 from the Tundra. Bone stock it delivers 389 horsepower and 479 pound feet of torque, which is a staggering jump for an FJ60. The audacity is matched by restraint. The engine bolts to the truck’s original five speed manual and factory two speed transfer case, so the driving rhythm still feels authentically Land Cruiser.

Chassis changes stay true to the keep it stock mission. The FJ60 retains leaf springs and solid axles at both ends, with a modest 1.5 inch lift to clear 35 inch tires. Slotted mag style wheels complete the period vibe and look ready for beadlock duty. It is the kind of setup that says trail capable without shouting over the classic lines.

Toyota kept the look and feel almost untouched. The truck wears a factory silver repaint with a tiny Turbo badge on the hatch as the only wink to what lives under the hood. Inside, it reads like 1985 in the best way, right down to the textures and switchgear. The only modern intrusion is a neatly integrated touchscreen that commands an upgraded JBL audio system, a smart nod to real world usability.

What makes this restomod sing is the philosophy. Many high dollar Land Cruiser builds chase power with crate V8s and wholesale suspension overhauls. Toyota chose a different path. By crafting mounts and a transmission adapter that let the Tundra V6 bolt in without surgery, the team showed how to blend new power with old character. If those basic swap parts ever reached the aftermarket, a lot of builders would think twice before defaulting to an LS.

Whether or not Toyota sells any of the hardware, this FJ60 sets a template worth following. Keep the icon’s stance and simplicity. Add reliable, modern power. Preserve the tactile charm of a manual gearbox and the honesty of solid axles. The result is a Land Cruiser that looks timeless in your driveway and feels genuinely renewed the moment you turn the key.
