Taunton police arrest 22-year-old New Bedford man after armed home invasion

Taunton police arrested a 22-year-old New Bedford man accused of breaking into an apartment and shooting another man inside.

Taunton Police Chief Edward Walsh said Joshua Manuel Deleon faces 10 charges, including home invasion and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, after the alleged armed home invasion.

Police arrived at an apartment on Newcomb Place Friday morning after receiving a call “with a person screaming on the line.” As they approached the multi-unit house, police were informed of reports of a firearm involved in the alleged break-in.

“Officers announced their presence outside the home in question and a woman answered the door and allowed the officers to enter a second floor apartment. Inside, they found two men struggling on the ground, with one man on top of the other,” police said.

Police pointed their firearms at the two men struggling on the ground and told them to stop.

“The men complied, and officers immediately noted that one of the two was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. The officers called for an emergency medical response,” police said.

Taunton police said the two men were known to each other and the “incident was not a random act of violence.”

“It is believed that the conflict originated in a different community and spilled over to Taunton,” authorities said.

The man suffering from a gunshot wound is expected to recover from his injuries. Deleon was eventually transported to a Boston Hospital, where he is being treated for injuries sustained during the altercation.
