Legendary Boston R&B group celebrated with ‘New Edition Way’ (Photos)
Saturday was “New Edition Day” in Boston in honor of the legendary R&B group founded in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood in 1978.
“It is an honor to welcome home Roxbury natives New Edition to celebrate their global impact, from our communities here in Boston to the music industry worldwide,” said Mayor Michelle Wu ahead of the celebration.
The day began at 10 a.m. at the corner of Ambrose and Albany streets, when Wu unveiled that Dearborn Street would be named “New Edition Way.” Then, at 11 a.m., the community celebrated with a block party on the newly named street in honor the group, whose members are Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill.
The block party’s location at Orchard Gardens was symbolic, as the members of the group grew up there when it was known as Orchard Park.
“I am truly grateful for the privilege of being made a permanent fixture in our city that has played such a significant role in shaping our lives and career,” Bell said.
Bobby Brown said “Boston is where it all began for us. This honor means the world to me.”
