NHL Power Rankings: Bruins sitting pretty at No. 4 despite recent woes
The good news for the Bruins is there are no great teams in the 2023-24 National Hockey League.
The bad news is they’re swimming in a vast sea of good teams, especially in the Eastern Conference. Could a team which makes the right moves by the trade deadline separate from the pack? You never know. We thought that’s what the B’s did last year.
Anyway, here are this month’s installment of the Herald’s Power Rankings:
1. New York Rangers – The Blueshirts, who own the best points percentage in the league (.750), have demonstrated they can win in a variety of styles.
2. Vegas Golden Knights – The champs may not be running away with anything, but they’re still formidable.
3. Vancouver Canucks – Rick Tocchet is the leading Jack Adams Award candidate and Thatcher Demko is vying for the Vezina. Weird how those two awards go hand-in-hand.
4. Boston Bruins – The team’s compete level may be the highest its been all season, but they’re 1-0-3 in their last four. Secondary scoring is an issue.
5. Los Angeles Kings – If they could figure out a way to win at home (5-5-3 at Crypto.com Arena), the Kings could be the team to beat.
6. Dallas Stars – We’ll see if the Stars can remain among the elite while dealing with the dreaded “week-to-week” loss of Jake Oettinger.
7. Colorado Avalanche – No. 1 goalie Alexandar Georgiev has a .897 save percentage. The Avs need better.
8. Toronto Maple Leafs – Forever top-heavy and flawed for spring hockey, the Leafs’ offensive weapons make them a tough out every night.
9. Winnipeg Jets – An identity that was slipping away the last couple of years has re-emerged.
10. Philadelphia Flyers – John Tortorella has remade the Flyers in his image, and sooner than anyone expected.
11. Florida Panthers – The Cats should be higher than this. But they’re in better shape than they were last year. And we all know what happened then.
12. New York Islanders – The Isles are 7-1-2 in their last 10, but it’s hard to believe in a team that has a minus-4 in goal differential.
13. Carolina Hurricanes – Still waiting for the ‘Canes to make their move. They’re an unimpressive 4-4-2 in their last 10.
14. Nashville Predators – It’s a nice story that the Preds are in a playoff spot, especially with Juuse Saros being just average so far.
15. Tampa Bay Lightning – Nikita Kucherov has put the estimable Bolts on his back, but the 6-10-2 road record is problematic.
16. Arizona Coyotes – The collection of young talent is starting to outgrow their college rink.
17. Washington Capitals – While Alex Ovechkin’s Gretzky chase has slowed to a crawl, new coach Spencer Carbery has the Caps knocking on the door of a playoff spot.
18. New Jersey Devils – They’re still losing games they shouldn’t be, but having Nico Hischier back in the lineup helps a ton.
19. Detroit Red Wings – The Patrick Kane signing has not catapulted the Wings to the heights they expected. They’ve lost three straight and fallen out of the playoff structure.
20. Minnesota Wild – Recent bias may be in full effect, but it looks like new coach John Hynes will guide the Wild to a playoff spot.
21. Pittsburgh Penguins – I thought Kyle Dubas’ off-season acquisitions would make the Penguins better. I was wrong.
22. Montreal Canadiens – 2022 No. 1 overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky hasn’t given the Habs an immediate bump, but there’s time for him to figure out how to flex his 6-3, 230-pound frame. Still, Montreal is in striking distance of a playoff spot.
23. St. Louis Blues – Meh. Maybe it was time for Craig Berube to go, but the roster has holes.
24. Calgary Flames – You wonder how long GM Craig Conroy hangs on to UFAs-to-be Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin – and if there’s a potential trade match with a certain Atlantic Division team with either of them.
25. Edmonton Oilers – The Oil has cooled off with three straight losses, but Edmonton is still capable of going on a tear that can get them into the playoffs.
26. Seattle Kraken – Maybe they should have qualified Morgan Geekie.
27. Buffalo Sabres – So much for that win in Boston propelling the Sabres. The franchise is still paying for the sins of tanking.
28. Ottawa Senators – Veteran coach Jaques Martin, installed as interim head coach after D.J. Smith’s firing, is good at defensive systems. But only if the goalies can stop the puck.
29. Columbus Blue Jackets – A slow start and now injuries have doomed the Jackets’ season, but they’ve got a keeper in Adam Fantilli.
30. Anaheim Ducks – As we thought at the start, Greg Cronin’s got a lot of work to do. But he’s doing it.
31. Chicago Blackhawks – The Hawks may be tanking, too, but it’s at the managerial level. Hasn’t seeped into the coaching or playing ranks. They might be able to pull off this long-term plan.
32. San Jose Sharks – David Quinn’s Sharks have punched back at a league that thought of them as a laughingstock. But they’re still a bad team.
