Crime Briefs: Salem EMT arrested for child pornography

Federal prosecutors say an EMT from Salem was a member of about 100 online chat groups sharing child pornography.

Connor McAuliffe, 34, was charged in federal court in Boston Wednesday with one count each of receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Magistrate Judge Jennifer C. Boal ordered McAuliffe held pending a full detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

McAuliffe’s charges stem from an international investigation conducted by the Homeland Security Investigations and South African Police Service.

In that investigation, detectives used the account of a South African national arrested on child pornography charges to gain access to more than 75,000 groups on phone-based encrypted chat services that were actively sharing child pornography, according to an affidavit by an HSI special agent.

Investigators say that they tied an account active on a number of those groups to McAuliffe. They then searched his home in Salem during which they seized his cell phone and allegedly found chat applications connected to a number of groups sharing child pornography.

According to the affidavit, McAuliffe was active in about 100 encrypted chats with names like “Boys Planet,” “Boys of Eden,” “boys video,” “10 to 16 years hot boys,” and “Chicos ninos y adolescentes cp,” which translates to “Boys, children and adolescents CP.”

Investigators say McAuliffe not only viewed the child pornography in the chat groups, but actively archived it, with his phone allegedly containing some 1,500 images and 50 videos of illicit materials. Descriptions in the affidavit of some of the files indicate they depict prepubescent boys both solo and being raped by men.

Terrill was the initial target of a search warrant executed at 63 Chelsea St. in East Boston, but police say he was seen exiting the building with the other two.

Police say that after they arrested Terrill they found inside his backpack a “large plastic bag” containing 153 grams of methamphetamine, another plastic bag containing 40 grams of fentanyl, and a stun gun.
