Near-perfect summer week in store for Boston, reduced visibility Monday

Boston can look forward to near-perfect summer weather this week with seasonable temperatures, low humidity and an extended dry stretch, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

Monday, however, may see increased haze from the Canadian wildfires heading down via northwesterly winds.

“Smoke could reach the surface, and that could cause some restrictions to visibility, and folks could smell smoke tomorrow,” said NWS meteorologist Andrew Loconto. “We haven’t heard any statements yet about air quality alerts yet from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.”

Loconto added that northern New York was already seeing “quite a bit of smoke that’s reduced visibility.”

Otherwise, “it’s really going to be hard to really ask for much better conditions for the work week here,” Loconto said.

Bostonians will welcome temperatures in the mid to low 80s – a bit cooler on the coast with a sea breeze – through Friday. Lows will remain in the upper 50s or low 60s in the evenings.

With low humidity to top off the ideal temperatures, it’ll be a great week to be outdoors and embrace the summer.

“Overall, it’s a really great week by Southern New England standards for early August,” Loconto said.

The NWS has added a mention of a slight chance of rain or thunderstorms in Western Massachusetts in/around the Berkshires, but Loconto said the vast majority of the Commonwealth should have a dry week.

Aside from the potentially reduced visibility Monday due to smoke, there should be plenty of sun this week in the Boston area, according to Loconto.

The NWS long-term discussion included a note saying, “Uncertainty increases for late in the weekend / early next week due to possible subtropical development off the Carolina coast.”

Loconto said the National Hurricane Center has the authority on anything tropical or subtropical, and they have a couple of areas they’re watching for possible development, but any impact on Boston is unclear. The meteorologist added that New England may be relatively more humid late in the weekend.

“Certainly compared to where it’s going to be this week, this should be quite a bit more humid,” Loconto said. “But as far as any impacts, it’s still kind of unclear if we see any at all. But it’s something that we’ll be monitoring throughout the week.”
