Healey elected to National Governors Association executive committee
Gov. Maura Healey has been elected to the executive committee of the National Governors Association for the next year to help steer the group as it works on “reigniting the American Dream.”
The NGA, a bipartisan group made up of the nation’s 55 state and territory governors, met in Colorado Springs over the weekend for their annual “Summer Meeting,” when they voted in a new executive committee and association chairs. According to the Bay State’s governor, the association’s work matters because state-level executives are focused on solving the real problems that affect their constituents daily.
“The leadership of Governors has never been more important than in this moment. We are working every single day to deliver for our residents on the issues that matter most in their lives – affordability, jobs, housing, education, health care and public safety,” Healey said in a statement following the election.
Healey will be joined on the NGA’s Executive Committee by Govs. Jared Polis of Colorado, Josh Green of Hawaii, Mike Braun of Indiana, Jeff Landry of Louisiana, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, and Bill Lee of Tennessee.
Former Governor Charlie Baker served on the executive committee in 2020-21.
Oklahoma’s Gov. Kevin Stitt was elected as Chair and Maryland’s Gov. Wes Moore as Vice Chair. Moore will serve as chair of the NGA starting next summer.
Like all NGA leaders, the new chair has chosen a theme to drive the work of the organization for the next year. Stitt’s is “Reigniting the American Dream.”
“The beautiful thing about the American Dream is that there are as many dreams as there are people. In a time where all we hear is about how divided we are, let’s remind them that we agree on this: The American Dream doesn’t need to be reimagined, it needs to be reignited,” Stitt said in a statement shared by the NGA.
According to the Sooner State’s chief executive, he and his colleagues are “in a unique position to lead this charge.”
Moore said that what’s novel about the group of state level leaders is that they work to solve problems regardless of which side of the aisle the solution comes from.
“I’m looking forward to collaborating with my fellow governors to build stronger on-ramps to opportunity so every person in our states has a shot at success – no matter how they define it,” Moore said.
Healey said that she’s looking forward to working with the chair, vice chair, and fellow committee members “to learn from one another and advocate for our states.”
“I’m honored that my colleagues have placed their faith in me to take on this leadership role on NGA’s Executive Committee,” she said.
Healey’s elevation among her colleagues comes as Minnesota’s Gov. Tim Walz, the former Democratic vice presidential candidate and one-time NGA Chair, as well as Kansas’ Gov. Laura Kelly, have both hinted they may stepping away from the organization due to its inability to confront the policies of the Trump Administration, according to ABC.
