Boston Convention Center renamed for former Mayor Tom Menino [Photos]
The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center officially has a new, but very familiar, name.
The 2.1 million square-foot building, which is the largest in New England, that dominates Summer Street in South Boston near the Interstate 90 interchange and the Seaport will now be known as the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center in honor of the mayor of Boston for 20 years, from 1993 to 2014. Menino died at 71 in October 2014.
Attendees of Saturday’s renaming ceremony included current Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, former mayors Ray Flynn and Marty Walsh, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, Congressman Stephen Lynch, a number of other elected officials and community leaders, the Menino family and performances from musicians of the Boston Pops.
The name change was included in an economic development law that Gov. Maura Healey signed in November.
“Mayor Menino loved Boston deeply, and he made our city into the global hub for business, commerce and tourism that we know it to be today,” Healey said last month.
