Golf: PGA Tour card looks unlikely for North Oaks’ Frankie Capan III through three rounds of Q-School finals
Frankie Capan III overcame a rough start Saturday to shoot a 4-under 31 on his final nine holes and salvage an even-par round of 70 in the third round of the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School at Sawgrass Country Club in Florida.
The North Oaks native remains 1 over par for the 72-hole tournament ,leaving him in a tie for 68th, eight shots back of the top-five finish needed to secure his PGA Tour card for the upcoming season.
Should Capan finish outside the top five, he will play with full status on the Korn Ferry Tour for 2024.
Capan recorded a double bogey and a triple bogey on his first nine Saturday, with each hole sabotaged by wayward drives that have plagued the 24-year-old for the last few months. But he pulled back even for the day with four birdies on his back nine, including a span of three straight holes with birdies to keep himself in a range where a lights-out round on Sunday could give him a chance at a top-five finish.
Wayzata grad Van Holmgren shot a 3-over round of 73 and is 3-over for the tournament.
Harrison Endycott leads the event at 12-under par.
