Watch Live: Karen Read retrial, Day 8

Jennifer McCabe is back on the stand at today’s eight day of the Karen Read retrial. We will post updates and watch live below…

McCabe is an essential witness in the case. She, along with Read and Kerry Roberts, found John O’Keefe dead or dying on the front lawn of 34 Fairview Road in Canton at around 6 a.m. on Jan. 29, 2022.

Prosecutors say that Read, who had been dating O’Keefe for roughly two years, struck him with her Lexus SUV and left him to freeze and die on that front lawn ahead of a Nor’Easter. The defense says that’s not true and that others inside that home killed O’Keefe and orchestrated a cover-up and frame job of Read.

And key to those theories is when McCabe made a Google search for “Hos long to die in cold.” McCabe, and prosecution expert Ian Whiffin, says she searched for it a little after 6:20 a.m. at Read’s request. The defense says their digital forensic expert, who has yet to take the stand, has her making the search at 2:27 a.m. — indicating prior knowledge of O’Keefe’s fate and thus evidence of a conspiracy.

Jurors were brought in at 9:12 this morning. Judge Beverly Cannone told them today is expected to be a full day.

On Wednesday, the previous day of trial, defense attorney Alan Jackson said his cross examination could continue for as long as two and a half hours. Prosecutor Hank Brennan said the length of his re-direct examination is dependent on Jackson’s questions, but could be as short as 20 minutes. Both agreed that McCabe is likely to be done on the stand by the lunch break, which is usually around 1 p.m.

This is a developing story.
