Townhall meeting on Ramsey County’s bail reform effort set for Tuesday
A townhall on Ramsey County’s bail reform effort will be held Tuesday night.
For the past three years, the county has been taking steps to reform its bail system and eliminate the disparities it can create. A work group includes the Ramsey County Attorney and Sheriff’s offices, St. Paul police, the nonprofit Justice Point and crime victims.
Among the goals: moving away from the current cash bail system to one based on risk. A pretrial risk assessment would be administered — which would conclude while the individual is being booked into jail — to determine if they can be released until their first court appointment, county officials say.
The county is one of seven sites selected across the country to be granted five years of research and policy support from Arnold Ventures to carry out the effort.
The townhall will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, 451 N. Lexington Parkway, in St. Paul. The public can also attend via Zoom.
