Rob Gronkowski gifts vehicles to military families ahead of Army-Navy game; Patriots legend still trying to become USAA member
Rob Gronkowski brought his classic hyped-up energy ahead of Saturday’s Army-Navy football game, and the excitement followed.
For two military families, meeting the Patriots legend brought a big sense of relief.
Gronk, in partnership with USAA, presented a 2022 Chevy Silverado to Army veteran Robert Trevino as well as a 2019 Chevy Blazer to Navy Petty Officer Kyle Kohlgraf during a high-spirited event that drew supporters from both military schools to Faneuil Hall on Friday.
“Just to see their smiles on Robert and Kyle’s faces and their families’ faces is what it’s all about,” Gronkowski told reporters. “They are well deserved. They protected our freedom … It is great to honor them with these two vehicles.”
Trevino served as a ground vehicle mechanic from 2014-2018 in the Army’s 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas. In 2017, the sergeant suffered a spinal cord injury during a motor vehicle crash, resulting in paraplegia.
The heavy duty pickup truck was retrofitted to accommodate Trevino’s needs, equipped with a raiser to help get him and his wheelchair inside it.
“It’s unreal. I’m still waiting to wake up any second,” the veteran said, with a big smile on his face. “This truck will definitely change the future of my family. I have no words for how grateful I am.”
Kohlgraf has served in the Navy since 2019, currently as an information system technician who keeps communication running aboard. He said he’s not sure how he got the nod for the vehicle besides the fact that his senior chief “wrote a paragraph” about why he and his family were a good fit.
“We have two beautiful boys, and we can’t wait to finally have a vehicle that we can depend on and will be reliable for however long — something we don’t have to worry about for a long while,” his wife Alex Kohlgraf said.
USAA, a financial services company providing insurance and banking products exclusively to military members, veterans and families, has spearheaded a Recycled Rides giveaway since 2019 with the National Auto Body Council. The initiative repairs vehicles that are then donated to those in need of reliable transportation.
With his NFL playing days behind him, Gronkowski, a four-time Super Bowl champion, wants to become a USAA member — but so far, his efforts have come up short of the end zone.
“I even jumped out of a plane three weeks ago at the Air Force Academy to try to get the USAA (membership), but nope, still don’t have it,” Gronkowski said as he laughed.
