Red Sox provide update on Wilyer Abreu’s health
Wilyer Abreu has yet to take the field in Fort Myers as he battles an illness, and Saturday the Red Sox provided more clarity on what the second-year outfielder is dealing with.
According to the club, Abreu reported to camp with a viral gastrointestinal illness. Lab tests were abnormal but he is feeling better. Abreu will be held out of baseball activity until labs are within a normal range, but the club believes things are trending in the right direction.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora had previously indicated Abreu wasn’t feeling well, and the outfielder has now missed nearly a full week since position players officially reported on Monday.
The hope is that he’ll be back soon enough to get caught up ahead of Opening Day.
Abreu is coming off a standout rookie season in which he batted .253 with 15 home runs, 58 RBI and a .781 OPS in 132 games. He finished sixth in the AL Rookie of the Year vote and became the first Red Sox rookie to win a Gold Glove since Fred Lynn in 1975.
Assuming he is able to fully recover and ramp back up over the next month, Abreu projects as the club’s Opening Day right fielder.
