Lucas: Biden’s ‘help’ leaves a lot to be desired
You’ve got a friend in Mo, not Joe, despite songwriter James Taylor’s best efforts.
The singer/songwriter was part of Joe Biden’s fundraising concert this week called “You’ve Got a Friend in Joe.”
But your real pal is Mo, especially if you are an illegal immigrant.
“Mo” is Gov. Maura Healey.
It was Mo, not Joe, who just signed a supplementary $3 billion budget bill that earmarks some $250 million in additional funds to deal with the overflow of thousands of illegal immigrants who have overwhelmed Massachusetts’ ability to care for them.
That appropriation is just the beginning, because without federal assistance and a curb on illegal immigration Massachusetts will soon face higher taxes and a cut in taxpayer services.
These Massachusetts arrivals are just a fraction of the millions of illegal immigrants that Joe Biden has let into the country through his open borders policy.
But while Biden has let them in, he has turned a cold shoulder to pleas from governors like Healey to come up with federal funds to help pay for their support. Biden has simply walked away from the mess he created.
Taylor’s famous “You’ve Got a Friend” song was used by Democrats as the theme for the $7,500 a seat fundraiser in Boston. It was one of three top dollar fundraisers.
Healey earlier met Biden at Logan Airport and joined him in the presidential limousine. But there is no evidence that Mo asked Joe for federal assistance, or that Mo suggested Joe tour the airport to see where scores of illegal immigrants he allowed into the country are sleeping because there is nowhere else for them to go.
It would have been better had Mo handed Joe a copy of Taylor’s “You’ve Got a Friend” lyrics which opens.
When you’re down and troubled and you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right,
Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest days,
Just call out my name, and you know wherever I am
I’ll come running.
Yeah, right. Joe’s coming. Just don’t hold your breath.
All is not dismal for illegal immigrants in Massachusetts, however, even if you may have missed the latest development had you blinked.
That is because for a few brief shining moments — or a couple of days, anyway — the minuscule “reenergized” Republican Party on Beacon Hill wrested control of the immigrant issue away from the Democrats.
The GOP victory did not last long, however, but it was fun while it lasted because it gave the impression, if only fleetingly, that Massachusetts was not a one-party state with Democrats in complete control.
It all centered around the attempt by the puny GOP minority in the Legislature (24 of 160 members of the House) or the Senate (four out of 40 members) to delay passage of the spending bill until the Democrats agreed to more debate, roll calls and accountability on how the immigration money would be spent. There was also a section for agreed upon pay raises for state workers.
The Republican minority acted as though they and the Democrats actually read the hundreds of pages of legislation they are voting on instead of relying on their leadership to tell them how to vote.
In any event, the Democratic majority as usual rolled over the Republican minority and sent the bill to Mo who speedily signed it into law upon its arrival with no questions asked.
Upon doing so, Mo could have quoted another passage from Taylor’s song: If the sky above you should turn dark and full of clouds,
And that old north wind should begin to blow,
Keep your head together and call my name out loud now,
Soon I’ll be knocking upon your door,
You just call out my name and you know wherever I am
I’ll come running…winter spring, summer or fall, yeah,
All you got to do is call and I’ll be there.
Hey, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend.
That friend, at least for now, turns out to be Mo, not Joe, unless you’ve got $7,500 lying around.
