Iceland January 2025: Kia leads, places Sportage at #1 and EV3 at #4

The Kia EV3 is an instant blockbuster in Iceland.

New car sales in Iceland rally back up 29.8% year-on-year in January to 593 units, keeping in mind January 2024 was down -37.5% on the year prior. The winner of the month is Kia, up 277.4% to a splendid 19.7% share. It distances a struggling Toyota (-16%). Hyundai (+168%), Tesla (+241.7%) and Mercedes (+72.7%) round out the Top 5 in stellar fashion, with Volvo (+100%) and Skoda (+122.2%) also performing extremely well in the remainder of the Top 10. Chinese newcomer Xpeng breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #9 with 2.7% share.

Model-wise, the Kia Sportage triumphs at 9.9% share vs. 3.7% over the Full Year 2024, selling more than double any other vehicle in market. The Tesla Model Y follows at #2 with 4.4% share vs. 4.2% last year, while the Toyota RAV4 manages a 4.2% share vs. 3.6% in 2024. The new Kia EV3 jumps to 4th place ahead of the Kia Sorento, Skoda Kodiaq and Toyota Land Cruiser, meaning the Top 7 is entirely composed of SUVs. The Xpeng G6 cracks the Top 10 at #10, the Ora Funky Cat is up to #14 and the Toyota bZ4X up to #20.
