Boston College easily gets past Central Connecticut State, 82-68

Boston College recorded its seventh straight victory over Central Connecticut State with a merciless 82-68 beatdown before a sparse crowd of 3,118 on Tuesday night at Conte Forum.

BC improved to 6-3 overall and 4-1 at home, while the Blue Devils dropped to 3-5. The Eagles resumed non-conference play after falling 84-78 at home to North Carolina State in the ACC opener for both schools last Saturday.

The Eagles wrap up a three-game homestand against longtime regional rival Holy Cross on Friday at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils entered the match after completing a Patriot League sweep with consecutive wins over Army and Holy Cross.

BC shot 50 percent from the floor with nine treys, 31 rebounds, 18 assists and a staggering 46 points off the bench. Graduate center Quinten Post led the way with 13 points and six boards. Guards Mason Madsen and Donald Hand Jr. combined for 31 points and Elijah Strong added nine points off the bench. Allan Jeanne-Rose and Jayden Brown scored 19 apiece for CCSU.

“For some of them it was just having the opportunity to play and they just need minutes,” said BC coach Earl Grant. “Our starters have played a lot of minutes throughout the year and our bench got deeper today.”

When the perimeter shot proved ineffective, BC went down low to Post, who scored on a bank shot off the backboard and a baseline dunk to give the Eagles a 7-4 lead into the first media timeout.

Grant sent Madsen onto the floor and after the timeout and received instant gratification. The senior guard nailed a corner trey and a pull up jumper on the right from the right baseline followed by a trifecta from the left corner to make it 15-8 with 13:45 to play. Post and Hand followed Madsen’s lead with 3-balls from off the key to give BC a 21-10 lead into the second media timeout.

“It definitely felt good to see them go early,” said Madsen. “As a player who prides myself on my shooting ability, you expect them to go in and it set the tone and opened the floor for everyone else.”

The Blue Devils tried to play catchup with the long ball but the shots wouldn’t fall. BC controlled the defensive boards and extended the run to take a 27-13 lead into the third media timeout.

Post dominated at both ends while the Eagles piled up bench points on the stretch run to the half. Madsen’s third trey put BC up 38-19 with 3:40 to play. BC shot 62% from the floor with 18 rebounds and 12 assists to take a 49-23 lead at the intermission.

“Just being able to come out of the locker room and executing the game plan on both sides of the floor, offensively and defensively and doing it convincingly was good to see,” said Grant.

The second half was a sloppier imitation of the first that was initially highlighted by a Post dunk follow with 17:39 to play. Hand continued to pile up the bench points with consecutive 3-balls from the right conner to give BC a 62-30 lead with 13:58 to play.

Excessive fouling from both camps slowed the game to a crawl after the midpoint in the half with BC up 70-45 into the third media timeout. The Blue Devils accrued enough garbage time points to make the score appear more respectable that it really was.
