The 41-year-old statie who recently died suddenly is being remembered as making the world “a better place,” as funeral details have been announced for the late sergeant.

Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Gregory Furtado passed away last week, leaving behind his wife and two kids.

Furtado graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 2006, and he later joined the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands. Earlier this year, he became a detective sergeant with the Narcotics Unit of the Cape and Islands district.

“We are heartbroken for Sergeant Furtado’s wife and children; they are in our prayers,” Mass State Police posted. “Our thoughts, also, are with Sergeant Furtado’s brother and sister Troopers. May the memories of him, and of his life of service, sustain all who loved and knew him in the difficult days and weeks to come.”

Furtado was a graduate of Plymouth North High School and St. Anselm College, where he played hockey.

His family was always his top priority, his obituary reads.

“Some of Greg’s best moments were spent watching his children’s sporting events and coaching flag football,” the obituary states. “Greg and Ali recently celebrated their 10 year wedding anniversary this past October.

“The world is a better place for having Greg in it,” the obituary continues. “He will be sorely missed by all that knew him as well as all of the people and lives he helped to better as a trooper.”

The cause of death was not immediately released.

The wake will be held at the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 373 Court St., (North) Plymouth, on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Saint Peter’s Church, 86 Court St., Plymouth.
