Mahtomedi hockey player dies after three-car accident
A Mahtomedi hockey player who was critically injured in a three-car accident on Wednesday has died.

Samson Walters, 16, of Hugo, a Junior Gold 16 player with Mahtomedi Youth Hockey, passed away Saturday morning after sustaining critical injuries in the crash in Grant.
“Our hearts go out to Samson’s family and friends, he was an amazing, talented, kind boy who was loved by everyone who got the honor to meet him,” said his GoFundMe page, which announced his passing.
“Samson’s memory will live on, he had an amazing community by his side all the way to the end. Samson will always hold a special place in everyone’s hearts,” the post read.
The hockey community in Mahtomedi rallied around Walters as families throughout the city have been putting hockey sticks on their front porches and turning on their porch lights to show support.
The head-on collision occurred around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday on Jamaca Avenue near the intersection of Jutsen Trail, police said.
Also injured in the crash was a 40-year-old Stillwater man who was driving a 2017 Hyundai Sonata northbound on Jamaca. His identity is not yet known, but he was transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul following the crash and his condition was not available.
A 47-year-old St. Paul woman, driving a 2019 Toyota RAV4 northbound on Jamaca, was treated at the scene and released, police said.
As of Saturday afternoon, the GoFundMe fundraiser for the Walters family had raised more than $26,000, above its $20,000 goal.
