Patriot League rivals Duxbury, Scituate meet for Div. 4 title
Whether catching up with friends on Front Street or taking a stroll down St. George’s Street, chances are you have heard folks clamoring for the looming Div. 4 Super Bowl rematch between Duxbury and Scituate.
It has been two years since Scituate’s Keegan Sullivan sprinted for a game-clinching two-point conversion as the Sailors stunned the Dragons, 14-13. This time around, the Patriot League heavyweights enter their latest Div. 4 duel with two completely different squads, both looking to leave their respective stamps on fantastic campaigns.
“These kids have not talked about any revenge at all,” said Duxbury coach Matt Landolfi. “It’s all about focusing on winning the game, and executing at practice so that we can execute on Friday night. Kids are working hard, proud of how hard they’ve been working. We’ve got a tough challenge ahead. This is a different Scituate team with a high-powered offense. Our defense, we’ve got a lot of work to do to get ready for them.”
Each school overcame a somewhat slow start to the fall. Duxbury (10-1) opened its season with a grueling 28-18 defeat at the hands of Hanover on Sept. 7. Since then, Duxbury opted to ride with a two-quarterback system, with Finn Carley (335 yards passing, three touchdowns) and Trevor Jones (1,229 yards, 18 touchdowns) each taking snaps under center.
Meanwhile, senior Alex Barlow has emerged as one of the state’s premier running backs (1,245 yards rushing, 17 touchdowns).
Scituate (9-3) got off to a sluggish 2-3 opening. Since a 42-28 loss to Hanover on Oct. 6, the Sailors have won seven straight, averaging 29.71 points per contest during their recent streak. Senior quarterback Jackson Belsan has been the catalyst, completing 154-of-244 passes for 2,424 yards and 27 touchdowns. His primary target is Lawson Foley, who has hauled in 45 receptions for 835 yards and 10 scores.
At the moment, Scituate might be rolling along. The Sailors, on the other hand, have taken on an underdog mentality.
“We love being under the radar and nobody giving us a chance,” laughed Scituate coach Herb Devine. “Nobody thinking we could get to this game, nobody thinking we could beat Holliston. Nobody thought we could beat Grafton, with their massive offensive line, our little guys going out there and competing with them.
“Obviously, this is just another week of people telling our kids that they don’t match up against Duxbury’s offensive line, and Barlow – our kids love that stuff.”

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME HISTORY

Scituate is 2-1 in three prior championships. The Sailors’ last trip to the finals was a memorable one as they defeated Duxbury 14-13 to win the Div. 4 title. Andrew Bossey’s 10-yard TD run with 27 seconds left set the stage for Keegan Sullivan’s game-winning two-point conversion run.
