Milton defeats Walpole, captures its first Div. 3 state championship

FOXBORO — Milton’s first Super Bowl championship will forever be memorable.

Patrick Miller threw for four touchdowns while Harrison Hinckle corralled a pick-six and a touchdown reception as Milton claimed its first Super Bowl title with a 42-21 win over Walpole in the Div. 3 title game on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium.

The win by Milton (9-4) avenged a defeat at the hands of Walpole during the regular season.

“I think our league and our non-conference schedule prepared us for this,” Milton coach Steve Dembowski said. “None of these guys are scholarship kids, they just love each other. It’s a testament to our kids and our coaching staff.”

In almost a mirror image of their regular season battle, Walpole (9-4) jumped on top of Milton 14-0 to begin the game courtesy of a one-yard touchdown run by Logan Keyes and a 68-yard touchdown reception from Kamari Hughes. From that point on it was all Wildcats.

Ronan Sammon (6 receptions, 75 yards, 2 touchdowns) got Milton on the board with an 11-yard touchdown reception. Then, after Ben Caledonia recovered a Walpole fumble, William Renz scored from four yards out to tie the game. Milton’s offense continued to stay on fire on its ensuing drive as the Wildcats went on a 12-play, 67 yard drive capped off by a Sammon 24-yard touchdown reception to take a 21-14 lead.

Harrison Hinckle then came through with the key play of the night, intercepting a tipped pass and returning it 42 yards for a score to make 28 unanswered points and give Milton a 28-14 advantage at the half.

“Our guys started to catch up to (Walpole’s) scheme,” Dembowski said. “We got some tipped passes, some deflections, and then we got some pressure. The kids played hard and the defensive game plan really came together when we got the lead.”

Milton extinguished any hopes of a Walpole comeback in the second half. AJ Cicerone intercepted Walpole’s Noah Mackenzie to end a promising Timberwolves drive and Hinckle corralled Miller’s fourth touchdown reception of the night to give Milton a commanding 35-14 lead.
