FOXBORO — There was no secret to how Fairhaven planned on winning the Division 6 Super Bowl against Salem on Thursday: Put the game in the hands of Justin Marques and a powerful offensive line.

That plan worked almost to perfection. Marques set a Super Bowl record with 46 carries en route to 228 yards and four touchdowns and a 26-22 victory over the Witches.

“Our offensive line was so powerful and was blowing people off the ball,” Fairhaven coach Derek Almeida said.

The dominance of Fairhaven’s line was told in the final stats as 71 runs accounted for 371 of the Blue Devils’ 377 total yards.

“That offensive line is the reason we are state champions,” Marques said. “They believe in each other and we’re so good.”

The Fairhaven defense also stepped to the fore, holding Salem 14 points below its season average and forcing three turnovers, two which they turned into touchdowns.

“What killed us was the turnovers, something that we haven’t done all season,” Salem coach Matt Bouchard said. “It really put us in a tough position.”

Fairhaven (12-1) got on the board first when Marques scored on a one-yard plunge on their first possession. Salem responded on the next series with a Devante Ozuna one-yard run and a conversion pass from Corey Grimes to Logan Abboud to make it 8-6.

The turnover bug would bite the Witches (10-3) late in the quarter as Ozuna fumbled and Fairhaven turned it into a Marques touchdown and a 13-8 lead.

It was still a five-point game late in the half when Salem had a golden chance to grab the lead, but Grimes was picked off at the goal line by William Foster.

The Witches would grab the lead early in the third quarter when Grimes hit Quinn Rocco Ryan in stride for a 73-yard TD on their first possession of the second half.

The Blue Devils took the lead for good on the next series when Marques broke a trap play for a 49-yard score to make it 19-15 after three.

Fairhaven had a shot to put the game away late in the fourth but was stopped on downs after a 17-play drive. But the Blue Devils’ defense forced a fumble that ended up in Marques’ fourth score of the game with 3:48 left that put the game out of reach.

“I think that we beat a really good football team,” Almeida said. “We had to play our best football and we did.”
