The Patriots signed veteran kicker Matthew Wright to their practice squad Wednesday, a source told the Herald.

Wright, 27, has yet to attempt a field goal this season, his fourth in the NFL. Over his career, Wright is 40-of-46 on the field goals in game appearances with the Steelers, Jaguars and Chiefs. The Falcons cut Wright from their practice squad Tuesday.

Wright arrives in New England after rookie kicker Chad Ryland missed a potential game-tying field goal from 35 yards away in Sunday’s loss to the Giants. Ryland also missed a 35-yarder in the team’s previous game, a 10-6 loss to the Colts. Ryland is 12-of-18 this season on field goal attempts and has made all of his extra points.

Last year, Wright went 15-of-18 between stints in Kansas City and Pittsburgh, including a career-long 59-yard field goal he made for the Chiefs. He appeared in six games, after serving as the Jaguars’ starting kicker over the entire 2021 season. As a rookie in 2020, Wright started three games for the Steelers and made all 11 of his kicks.
