NE cross-country: Westford Academy’s Jack Graffeo headed to nationals

Two weeks ago, it was the Div. 1 cross country state championship.

Saturday at Franklin Park, Westford Academy senior Jack Graffeo added another prestigious top finish to his resume.

With a 15-minutes flat performance in the Marty Lewis Championship 5K of the 45th Annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Northeast Regionals, Graffeo outran a loaded field of runners from 10 different states to take the gold and qualify for the national finals in San Diego, Calif., for a second straight year.

His first-place finish comes a year after former teammate and current Stanford runner Paul Bergeron finished third, continuing a legacy of star performances from the Grey Ghosts on a national scale.

“Everything I do is through (Westford Academy), they’ve helped me go all the way to state champion, and now regional champion, and hopefully they’re going to be a national champion with me,” Graffeo said. “Everybody that supports me got this win today. … It feels awesome (to win regionals). I mean, knowing that I’m out here with a group of fantastic guys, a bunch of really good competition.”

It was around the two-mile mark that Graffeo looked around to see Phillips Academy Andover star senior Tam Gavenas right beside him, a familiar foe who battled plantar fasciitis to still finish second overall (15:16) and qualify for nationals for a third straight year.

Graffeo quips he’s looking to even the head-to-head battle with Gavenas in San Diego, since Gavenas holds a 4-3 advantage in the seven times they’ve crossed paths in competition.

In actuality, there’s a lot of respect and admiration.

“I just looked around, I saw Tam right by my side,” Graffeo said. “Gave him a little fist bump. It was a good time. I knew that we were going to start rolling, so I wanted to show my appreciation. … I love running with this guy.”

Gavenas felt fortunate he was able to gut it out and compete despite his injury, though he admitted the performance wasn’t what he strived for. Still, he’s headed back to nationals, which never gets old.

“No it doesn’t, it always feels like a new experience,” he said. “We’ve got new people, always. … Just being able to see new people, see new talent, I’m super excited to see them again.”

The top 10 runners in the regional race qualify for nationals. Tyngsboro native and Bishop Guertin senior Matthew Giardina took fourth with a 15:27 time, and Falmouth junior Silas Gartner took the 10th and final qualifying spot with a 15:36 mark.

Pennsylvania had the second-most representatives qualify for the national championships from the region, through junior Matt Gosling (15:29), senior Vinay Raman (15:31) and sophomore Rowan Carr (15:32).

The girls’ Phil Zodda Championship race had two runners from Pennsylvania qualify for nationals as well, with Bethlehem native Virginia Kraus finishing atop the field (17:35) as a junior after a fifth-place finish last year.

“It feels great, it definitely feels good to have a season of training culminating in such an exciting win,” she said. “I’m super excited about it, great to see the representation of Pennsylvania out there (in San Diego). … This is the biggest one that I’ve raced in, so it’s my favorite and the most rewarding.”

Senior Zariel Macchia of Shirley, N.Y., took second (17:40), qualifying for nationals for a fourth time.

Connecticut was well-represented in the regional, as Glastonbury’s Brooke Strauss (third, 17:42), West Hartford’s Liv Sherry (fourth, 17:50), Old Lyme’s Chase Gilbert (fifth, 17:57) and Hartford’s Tess Sherry (10th, 18:18) all finished in the top 10.

The top finisher among Massachusetts natives was Phillips Academy Andover junior Amelia Alvazzi, who took 13th at 18:31.
