Pickorama: Predicting this year’s champions

It seems like just yesterday that we were sifting through the top games of the opening weekend of the high school football season.

Twelve weeks have come and gone, leading into championship week. Eight state titles as well as a pair of vocational championships are on the line and we’d like nothing better than to end it on a perfect slate.

We will start with the Division 8 state championship and pick them in chronological order.

DIV. 8 CHAMPIONSHIP: West Boylston over Carver

Carver’s lethal passing attack has put up some eye-popping numbers over the course of the regular season. But they will be facing an imposing West Boylston team who knows what it takes to win at Gillette, having captured the Div. 7 title last year.

LARGE SCHOOL VOCATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Blackstone Valley over Bay Path
This should be one of the better vocational championship games in recent memory. Just going on a hunch that this might very well be the year of Blackstone Valley.

SMALL SCHOOL VOCATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Blue Hills over Tri-County
Blue Hills’ vaunted ground attack was the difference in its regular season victory over Tri-County. It might be too tall a task for the Cougars to try and slow down the Warriors in this rematch.

DIV. 1 CHAMPIONSHIP: Xaverian over St. John’s Prep

I’d feel better about this pick if some of Xaverian’s high-end talent wasn’t banged up. That being said, just have a feeling the Hawks have proven to be an extremely resilient bunch which has overcome a lot this year.

DIV. 6 CHAMPIONSHIP: Fairhaven over Salem
Not an easy game to pick as I can easily see either team winning. I’m rolling the dice with a Fairhaven team that showed me a lot of Thanksgiving with a final-minute win over a nine-win Dartmouth squad.

DIV. 2 CHAMPIONSHIP: King Philip over Marshfield
Two of the top public school teams in the state vie for the Div. 2 title. Hard to go against Brian Lee and the Warriors, who have been superb since the opening game of the season. That being said, I don’t think this is going to be a cakewalk as the Rams have enough weapons to make things interesting.

DIV. 3 CHAMPIONSHIP: Walpole over Milton
A rematch of a mid-season contest won by the Timberwolves as part of a current eight-game winning streak. No doubt Steve Dembowski will have the Wildcats ready to slow down the Walpole offense, we think Noah Mackenzie and company are just too much to handle.

DIV. 7 CHAMPIONSHIP: Uxbridge over Amesbury
Uxbridge has ridden the offensive talents of Kellen LaChapelle and Camden LaChapelle to an undefeated season. While we certainly respect the running ability of the Sanchez brothers, we will lean toward Matt Blood’s Spartans.

DIV. 4 CHAMPIONSHIP: Duxbury over Scituate

Since losing the season opener to Hanover, the Dragons have run the table in impressive fashion. Don’t overlook the fact that many Duxbury players are fully aware of what happened a couple of years ago when Scituate knocked them off in this very game.

DIV. 5 CHAMPIONSHIP: Foxboro over Hanover

Has the potential to be one of the better of the 10 championship tilts. Warriors showed they could compete with the big boys in the Hockomock League and that will serve them well here.

LAST WEEK: 11-9 (.550)

SEASON TO DATE: 85-45 (.654)
