Sean Kilty, Stoneham stage monster effort in downing Reading, 42-14
BOSTON – A three-touchdown performance from Sean Kilty helped guide Stoneham to a dominant 42-14 victory over Reading at Fenway Park on Tuesday night.
It was Stoneham’s (9-2) third consecutive victory over Reading (10-2) in the annual rivalry matchup. The Rockets lead the overall series 71-33-7 but Stoneham had won five of the last seven matchups.
This fact was not lost on Kilty, who had some emotions to expel following the win.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the year,” Kilty said. “To bring this back three times in a row and assert some dominance is awesome. This is our trophy, our game, this is Stoneham’s league.”
Head coach Bob Almeida said his team showed a new level it hadn’t reached since earlier in the season and that was the key to the dominant win.
“These kids work so hard,” Almeida said. “When they are ready to go, they are ready to go. I haven’t seen this in them since the Burlington game. They really turned it on today.”
The Rockets opened with possession but were unable to get any momentum beyond one Jack Murphy first down and would turn it over on downs at their own 36. Stoneham would begin a slow, methodical charge to the Reading 33 before quarterback Sean Powers connected with Logan Tran on a long touchdown.
Reading was ready to answer, as Murphy converted a 3rd-and-18 and then scrambled for a 39-yard touchdown just two plays later. This evened the score at seven but it would not stay that way for very long.

Just a few plays into the next drive, Kilty found a hole and dashed 65 yards for the go-ahead touchdown as time expired on the first quarter.
“When he wants to get going, he gets going,” Almeida said of Kilty. “He’s relentless, he doesn’t stop and no play is dead.”
Reading would stall on the next drive and the Spartans would be ready to build a lead. This came via several runs, with a 27-yard breakaway rush from Kilty finding the end zone. Stoneham would shortly after force another Reading punt and then killed the majority of the remaining clock in the half.
With just over 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Powers connected with Wyatt Romanowski for a five-yard touchdown. Reading would push to the one-yard line on the ensuing drive but couldn’t finish before time expired.
The Spartans kept their foot on the gas in the second half. This started with a lengthy drive that ended with a Tran rushing touchdown.
“That first drive of the second half was pretty good,” Almeida said. “We kept that ball for awhile, it was great.”

Stoneham forced a fumble just a few plays later, retaking possession in Reading territory.
The 35-7 lead would hold for the third but Kilty added his third touchdown of the night early in the fourth to make it 42-7. Reading would add a garbage time touchdown but it was far too little, too late.
“We work hard, day in and day out,” Powers said. “Not even just at practice, when we are lifting in the summer. We went through so many problems with the new school this year but we just do what Stoneham does, we work hard.”
With the rivalry and Middlesex league victory, Powers said it was a perfect way to celebrate the team’s seniors.
“What a way to send them out,” Powers said. “I couldn’t be more proud of my guys.”
