Celebrate music of the season with these holiday concerts

Traditional and irreverent Christmas music? Yes and yes. Traditional and irreverent Hanukkah music? Again, yes and yes. Our holiday music guide has everything from Handel’s “Messiah” to Darlene Love to carols in Spanish.

“Messiah,” Nov. 29 – Dec. 1, Symphony Hall

The Handel and Haydn Society has had some time to perfect “Messiah.” This year will be H+H’s 171st consecutive year of doing Handel’s masterwork. If you only know the “Hallelujah” chorus, no problem, that’s a great start. Now it’s time to dive into all those other magnificent choral triumphs — see “For Unto Us a Child is Born” and “His Yoke is Easy.” handelandhaydn.org

The Holiday Pops, Dec. 5 – 24, Symphony Hall

Keith Lockhart hasn’t been doing the Holiday Pops for 171 years, but his orchestra is so merry and bright that it feels like they have had a century to perfect this annual tradition. That tradition always includes “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Sleigh Ride,” and other faves. But Lockhart makes it a habit to bring new elements to the party each year. Something fresh for 2024 is a new work by local David Coleman, based on Ashley Bryan’s book “Carol of the Brown King.” bso.org/pops

Sol y Canto, Dec. 7, Club Passim, Cambridge

This local Latin music group presents a holiday show in English and Spanish. Band leaders Rosi and Brian Amador will lead old and new friends through seasonal songs from the States, Puerto Rico, and Latin America. passim.org

The Aimee Mann & Ted Leo Christmas Show, Dec. 7, the Cabot, Beverly

Mann and Leo, the first names in Christmas! As unlikely as it sounds, these indie rock legends have a long tradition of putting on fun, silly, and earnest holiday packages. This one features pals Paul F. Tompkins, Nellie McKay and Josh Gondelman. thecabot.org

Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band, Dec. 12, Museum of Fine Arts

The MFA is celebrating Hanukkah early. Ezekiel’s Wheels is helping out with their own brand of folky and jazzy, warm and wild klezmer. ewklezmer.com

The LeeVees Hanukkah Party For All, Dec. 13, the Cut, Gloucester

Guster’s Adam Gardner and the Zambonis’ Dave Schneider lead the LeeVees through original songs about Hanukkah. Think that’s a stretch? The Zambonis only write songs about hockey so Hanukkah is a breeze by comparison. thecutlive.com

Love For The Holidays with Darlene Love, Dec. 15, the Cabot, Beverly

“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is the greatest holiday pop song of all time. And don’t you dare come at me with Mariah. I’m ride-or-die for Darlene. thecabot.org

Baroque Christmas, Dec. 19 & 22, Jordan Hall

Need another helping of H+H? This program features holy and joyful pieces from Bach and Christoph Graupner and three Latin American composers making their debut with the Society: Antonio de Salazar, Francisco Lopez Capillas, and Juan de Araujo. handelandhaydn.org
