Sutton girls nab 4th straight Div. 4 soccer crown

MILTON — Sutton has found the formula, again.

Senior captain Addy Jerome registered a goal and an assist as top-ranked Sutton claimed its’ fourth straight girls soccer championship, and its 12th since 1991 with a 2-0 victory over second-ranked Hamilton-Wenham in the Div. 4 final.

“I’m very happy for them,” said Sutton coach Jenson Shipp. “Even the juniors who played as eighth-graders, I think they’ve won, I think it’s now 34 single-elimination games, four state championships. I play a role, but it is minor compared to everything that they’ve put in, and everything they have accomplished. So, very happy for them.”

The four-peat is a state record for consecutive girls soccer championships, shattering a longstanding streak that Sutton itself (1991-93) shared with Hingham (2014-16). It was the 16th title appearance for the Suzies (17-2-0), continuing a run of dominance dating to the past century. While scoring chances were few and far between, the Suzies completely controlled possession in the opening half, and drew first blood off a shot from Ava Magnuson. The junior captain corralled a loose ball in the box in the 22nd minute, then fired a shot into the twine to put Sutton ahead, 1-0.

Just moments later in the 29th minute, Jerome was able to gain control of a rebound, and took a shot herself. The attempt slipped five-hole, through the goaltender’s legs and into the back of the cage to make it a 2-0 contest.

“I’m proud of every single person,” Jerome said afterward. “I’ve seen them grow over the four years. It’s really cool to build a dynasty, and to bring girls soccer to the next level.”

Facing one of the highest-scoring teams in the Commonwealth, Sutton showed no fear as it held Hamilton-Wenham (18-1-4) without a shot on goal in the first half. Even after the Generals ramped it up in the game’s later stages, they could still only muster four shots total.

“It just feels great,” said Magnuson. “Because when people hear our name, they just think: ‘Oh, Sutton, that’s the team that won the four-peat.’ We broke that (streak) record at our school, and the legacy just continues.”
