A man in his late 60s died in an overnight house fire in Leominster.

“On behalf of the Leominster Fire Department, I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to this man’s family and loved ones,” said Fire Chief Robert Sideleau II said. “This is a very sad event for them and our community.”

Firefighters responded to a fire at a condo building at 78 Meadow Pond Drive in Leominster where they found a fire in the living room of one of the units that had “badly injured” a man in his late 60s with “limited mobility,” according to the state Fire Marshal.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. While firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control, the damage was enough that another occupant was displaced, according to the Marshal’s office.

The fire is under investigation but firefighters found both smoking materials and home oxygen equipment in the home.

“This is the second fatal fire in less than a week where investigators found home oxygen equipment,” said State Fire Marshal Jon Davine. “There’s no truly safe way to smoke, but smoking around medical oxygen is especially dangerous. Oxygen will allow any fire to spread faster and burn hotter. If you or a loved one use home oxygen, please don’t smoke.”

2 killed in New Hampshire fire

Two people were killed in a house fire in Weare, New Hampshire, Wednesday morning.

The local fire department responded a little before 10:45 a.m. Wednesday to 83 High Rock Road where firefighters found smoke billowing from a second-story window.

Firefighters found two dead occupants inside the home as they moved through the house fighting the blaze. Authorities did not release the victims’ names. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
