Christina Milian: ‘Meet Me Next Christmas’ all about the magic

As not only the star but an executive producer of Netflix’s currently streaming rom-com “Meet Me Next Christmas,” Christina Milian knows what it takes to make a holiday movie stand out in a very crowded season.

“Being part of this producing team — it wasn’t just about a title — I felt connected to this whole project,” she said in a Zoom interview. “What has to stand out in a Christmas rom-com? A sense of magic.

“Then what’s the actual attraction for somebody to watch the film? It takes a great trailer with some fun actors and it’s got to spark interest in some way. Tell a story we haven’t seen before.

“Once it’s all landed, you’re finally getting that connection with the audience to watch it, it’s making sure you check all the marks. We want to feel the romance! We want to feel that awkward moment. You want to get to The End. You want to figure out, Who does she end up with? You want the suspense.”

“Meet Me Next Christmas,” Milian’s third Netflix rom-com, finds her Layla meet cute with a hot guy at the airport during the Christmas rush. After hours talking, connecting, as he runs off, they agree if fate decrees they will meet next Christmas Eve at the sold-out Pentatonix concert.

Fate looms large here. Is the movie suggesting it’s good to trust in the stars and not your own initiative?

“I think it is the message here,” Milian, 43, agreed. “Because sometimes we tend to get in our own way. Not to say you have to trust in something that you can’t see or touch or feel. It might be wherever your faith may be.

“But it’s about believing in something. And the pursuit of getting there without maybe putting up a wall for everything.

“We’ve got to have our rules of course. Don’t get me wrong. But I do think when fate lends a hand, when you have a positive attitude and you just keep going forward, what’s supposed to happen is going to happen.”

In a career that began at 19, Milian has long known how to make things happen with a positive attitude and sense of self.

“That’s my way of life, my whole life. My career — I’m grateful to have the longevity.

“I’ve been very patient. How it happens, and whenever it happens, I’m just appreciative. As an actor especially, sometimes it’s paycheck to paycheck. You never know. But that’s everybody’s life. Not just actors. We’re all dealing with the same thing. So sometimes we shift with the times.”
