Newton North sweeps past Brookline to net volleyball state title
BILLERICA – If you were to enter the Newton North High School volleyball facility, you might just notice a sign, marked with a series of goals the Tigers hope to achieve during the fall season.
Prior to Saturday, there was still one box left to mark off. Safe to say, that mission has now been accomplished. Senior captain Devon Burke (13 kills) helped her team get off to a roaring start, and the Tigers never looked back as top-ranked Newton North clinched its third consecutive girls volleyball championship with a 3-0 sweep of No. 2 Brookline.
“Since I’ve been here the last four years, we’ve just been trying to build a winning culture of hard work and dedication,” said Tigers coach Nile Fox. “Every year, we come in and we put our goals on ‘the board’. In the beginning of the season, we try to check them off. Every time we get one, we check them off. I think that’s helped us, and I think the alumni (as well). We play for our alumni, that set the pace for us and put us in this position. It’s really the culture. We’re just trying to get better.”
The Tigers (24-1) were challenged but stood firm against their Bay State Conference rivals, winning by set scores of 29-27, 25-22 and 25-14. Burke registered a series of kills in a dramatic opening stanza, finishing it with a spike to put her team in front.
“It’s a whole new team this year,” Burke said. “From the beginning of the season, we knew what we wanted to do, and we did it.”
After engaging in a chess match with the Warriors (19-4) early, the Tigers began to find their rhythm. Sophomore Sasha Selivan delivered a crucial three aces in the first set for Newton North, then helped the Tigers embark on another run with a fourth in the ensuing stanza.
“They really helped us in that first stage,” Fox said of Burke and Selivan. “The first set, Brookline was on fire, they were serving hard at us. They had the momentum, and Devon really helped us with the offense, and Sasha really came through with that service run she went on. That was big for us to get that win in the first set off of those two things.”
Brookline was paced by Emilie Ferdinand, who had 12 kills to go with 15 digs.
Since 2014, Newton North has now won six Div. 1 volleyball titles. Burke might be continuing her career at Babson College while also playing basketball next year, but will always cherish her high school journey.
“Coming into high school, and never having played volleyball before, it’s all been Nile,” Burke said of her coach. “This program, these teammates, they gave me my love for volleyball. They’re the reason my future is the way it is.”
