Div. 2 HS volleyball: Three-peat for Westborough
BILLERICA – It took 16 lead changes and 14 ties in the fourth set, but No. 1 Westborough won a third straight Div. 2 state volleyball title Saturday.
No. 2 Oliver Ames gave the Rangers a fight, but several kills from senior captain Georgia Tyrrell and a final ace from senior Teeghan Patch lifted Westborough over the Tigers 27-25 in the fourth and final set to win the match 3-1 at Billerica Memorial High School.
“I don’t have words for it,” said Westborough coach Roger Anderson. “I don’t think I ever expected anything like this to happen, so I’m super proud of our girls. They worked hard all year and they certainly had to earn it. Oliver Ames was excellent and gave us everything we could handle.”
With a 19-16 deficit in the fourth, Oliver Ames (21-4) rallied off five straight points to go up 21-19 and eventually had three set points. Westborough (21-1) rallied thanks to three big kills from Tyrrell to eventually knot the score 24-24 before winning three of four points to win.
“We’ve been dominant in the playoffs and I told them that (Oliver Ames) is a really good team and it’s going to be a fight the whole way,” Anderson said. “In the second game, we didn’t manage it as well as we could have, but in the third and fourth sets, as it was back and forth, we’re watching our team and they’re just playing hard. They’re not afraid of what the big moment may ask of them.”
Tyrrell dominated the first set with seven of her 26 kills coming in a 25-19 victory.
“It feels amazing,” Tyrrell said about winning her third straight state title. “It’s super exciting. I’ve had so many great teammates that I’ve got to play with.”
Oliver Ames came back in the second set to roll to a 25-18 win as senior captain Addyson Smock notched seven of her team-high 19 kills to knot the score 1-1.
In the third, Westborough led 5-0 early before Oliver Ames once again came back to lead 11-9 with an 11-4 run. The Rangers matched the intensity as the teams traded leads before a 4-0 run for the Rangers made it 17-14. Oliver Ames got as close as 22-21 before Westborough won the third set 25-21.
“It’s really exciting being able to play a really good team,” Tyrrell said. “They have amazing hitters, passers, setters and everything. I think being able to have a competition like that pushes us and is exciting. Being able to also work together as a team to accomplish this is amazing.”
