Grier served as the team’s third-string quarterback ever since he signed to the active roster on Sept. 22. He did not see any game action with the Patriots. His release leaves Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe as the Patriots’ only available quarterbacks on the active roster, while rookie quarterback/receiver Malik Cunningham is available on the practice squad.

In practice, Grier took scout-team reps almost exclusively aside from the Patriots’ lone practice last week before their bye. Jones and Zappe split all the starting reps in practice this week. Asked about his time with the starters, Grier told reporters this week it was “great,” and he believed he could help the team win.

“I came in at a tough time as far as reps go, so it was good to get some,” Grier said. “Even the scout-team reps I get when we do scout team are good. Just good to play ball. You’ve seen guys around the league like Josh Dobbs. It’s awesome to see what he did, man. At the end of the day, you’ve just got to play ball.

“And (Dobbs)’ obviously a testament to that theory that I believe in wholeheartedly. If I get the opportunity, I’m just going to go play and win.”

Grier had previous stops with the Panthers, who drafted him in the third round of the 2019 draft, the Cowboys and Bengals. His release clears an open roster spot that is expected to be filled by practice-squad offensive tackle Conor McDermott.

ESPN first reported Grier’s release.
