High school football: Thursday’s state tournament quarterfinal predictions

CLASS 4A

Hill-Murray (9-1) vs. Totino-Grace (10-0), at Blaine High School, 5:30 p.m.

An intriguing matchup between a pair of metro private schools, Totino-Grace leans on the ground-game dominance of Marquel Keten, who has 1,368 rushing yards and 19 scores this season. Meanwhile, the Pioneers have a dynamic offense led by dual-threat quarterback Jackson Reeves, whose legs played an integral role in Hill-Murray surviving a section final scare against Simley. On paper, the Eagles have seen more top competition throughout the season. So it’s only logical to give them the edge in this one. But if Hill-Murray can score, it can stay in the fight. OUR PICK: Totino-Grace 24, Hill-Murray 17

CLASS 6A

Blaine (7-3) vs. Minnetonka (8-2), at Osseo High School, 7 p.m.

Blaine QB Sam Shaughnessy ran for 260 yards and three scores in a first-round win over Rosemount, then turned around and threw for 232 yards and five touchdowns in a second-round win over Forest Lake. Whatever is required, he can deliver. Everything will likely be required to upend Minnetonka and its dominant running game. OUR PICK: Blaine 35, Minnetonka 31

Edina (8-2) vs. Maple Grove (10-0), at Park Center High School, 7 p.m.

If the Crimson are to capture the Class 6A crown, they’ll likely have to run through every West Metro power to do it. They beat Eden Prairie in Round 2 of the playoffs, and now get defending state runner-up Edina in the state quarters. Maple Grove was boosted by the return of star running back Charles Langama last week. He adds an element to the offense that makes the unbeaten Crimson all the more difficult to match up against. OUR PICK: Maple Grove 30, Edina 21
