Everett runs away from St. Mary’s
EVERETT — Too many weapons in too many places.
That was the problem for St. Mary’s in trying to shut down Everett on Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The Crimson Tide racked up over 500 yards of total offense en route to a 56-28 win over the Spartans to compete a 9-2 campaign in coach Justin Flores’ first season.
“I was happy to give these guys a chance to play on Thanksgiving,” Flores said about a matchup that was only put together in August.
The Crimson Tide’s explosiveness was clear early and often. Despite the Spartans ability to grind down the clock during its possessions, Everett seemingly always had a response and turned a close game into a runaway with three touchdowns in a 2:52 span late in the first half.
“They just have so many weapons,” St. Mary’s coach Sean Driscoll said.
The teams had traded touchdowns early before Damian Lackland scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns to give Everett a lead it never lost.
A 34 yard Carlos Rodrigues to Christian Zamor connection, their second of the half, increased the lead to 21-7 and ignited the three touchdown outburst.
St. Mary’s fumbled on the next possession and it turned into Lackland’s second touchdown with 2:52 left in the half.
The Spartans then suffered a self-inflicted wound when Jayden Prophete took an interception 52 yards to the house on the next series to make it 35-7.
Devell Pamplin rescued some of the momentum for St. Mary’s when he returned the kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 35-13 at the break.
Rowan Merryman’s one yard run late in the third got the Spartans even closer at 35-20 as the teams would trade scores on the next three possessions.
It wasn’t until Prophete caught a seven yard TD pass with 8:32 left that the Crimson Tide could finally relax and begin to celebrate.
Lackland finished the night with 142 yards on only 11 carries while Rodrigues had 226 yards and three TDs through the air for Everett.
Merryman rushed for 83 yards and a score while also throwing a touchdown pass for the Spartans (6-5).
