Red Sox lineup: Danny Jansen sitting despite success against Orioles starter
After a 12-3 Red Sox win in Monday’s series opener and a 5-3 Orioles victory on Tuesday, the two American League East rivals will play their last game of the regular season on Wednesday night.
Boston is looking to pull off their first Fenway series win against Baltimore since Opening Day weekend 2023, but the Red Sox are 4-8 against the O’s this season, including getting swept by them in their home opener series in April. The Red Sox are 34-40 at home, and have been outscored by visiting teams 376-336.
With Trevor Story starting at shortstop, Ceddanne Rafaela will start at second base for the first time this season.
Right-hander Nick Pivetta (5-10, 4.38 ERA) will go up against Orioles righty Dean Kremer (7-9, 4.27 ERA). The Red Sox will look for some big hits from Rafael Devers and Triston Casas, the only members of Wednesday’s lineup who’ve taken Kremer deep before. In 18 career at-bats against the Orioles starter, Devers is hitting .389 with a 1.228 OPS, a double, two home runs, and a pair of walks. In his four career at-bats against Kremer, Casas has solo-homered, walked twice, and struck out once.
One notable absence from the Red Sox lineup, though, is Danny Jansen. The veteran catcher has homered twice, walked twice, and driven in three runs in his five career at-bats against Kremer. Connor Wong, getting the start instead, is 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
