WORCESTER – Uxbridge head coach Kelly Rosborough’s sister was on the only Spartans field hockey team to ever make the Final Four up until 2021 – back in 1999.

The tide has changed.

With a 4-0 win over third-seeded Monomoy in the Div. 4 state final at WPI on Saturday, No. 1 Uxbridge (22-1) pulled off its third straight state title, joining Watertown and Walpole as the only programs in MIAA field hockey history to ever three-peat.

Young star power once again was at the forefront, with sophomore Julianna Casucci and eighth-grader Ava Rosborough each finding the back of the cage twice against an otherwise strong Sharks (17-3-3) defensive effort. Monomoy answered with plenty of transitions into the offensive end, but the Uxbridge defense played tremendous to diffuse most threats.

“Every championship has a special meaning,” Kelly Rosborough said. “We’ve just been fortunate to have this team and to have this crew. Each year they deliver, and it’s just as magical as the first time.”

The Spartans brought a load of offensive pressure right away, which the Sharks mostly staved off in a close first quarter. Casucci’s goal five minutes in was the only goal of the game up until she scored again with six seconds left in the half for a 2-0 lead.

Monomoy was far from out of the game, dialing up a bevy of dangerous breakaway transitions. It often found itself with just one defender to beat down the sidelines, but Uxbridge’s Bailey Dzivasen (junior), Addie Blood (freshman) and Madison Cammuso (freshman) each effectively cut off the lanes to slow, or end, the threat.

Much of it the Sharks’ surge came in the third quarter, but the defense and goalie Julia Brynn Okenquist (three saves) held onto the shutout.

“I have to give credit to my defense,” Kelly Rosborough said. “(Dzivasen) 100 percent came to play and we were so thankful to have her on that field.”

“They came up with new strategies, and we just adjusted very well … we just communicated really well,” Dzivasen added. “It’s amazing (to win). We worked so hard all year for this, especially this game – we had a fire under our belt because we wanted that sign with the three-peat.”

Once Uxbridge settled down, Ava Rosborough scored the insurance goals in the third and fourth quarters.
