Carney Hospital, Nashoba Valley Medical Center set to close Saturday after bankruptcy
It’s likely the end of the line for Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center.
The two medical facilities are set to close Saturday after officials did not find another company to purchase them, a scenario that is set to leave multiple communities without immediate access to health care.
Steward Health Care finalized deals Thursday to sell four of its hospitals to new owners but Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center were not among them. State officials have previously said no “qualified bidders” stepped forward for the two facilities.
The mood outside Carney Hospital in Dorchester Friday was somber. Employees hugged each other as boxes and supplies were loaded into a moving truck. One person took home a picture of their grandmother, who had worked at the hospital.
Advocates rallied this week to urge Gov. Maura Healey’s administration to take executive action to save the two facilities. The governor has said the state “will ensure that residents continue to have access to high-quality medical care and that all staff” are connected to new jobs.
“We’ve heard the concerns raised by the communities and staff impacted by Steward’s plans to close Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. We share their frustration – Massachusetts communities should never have been put in this position,” she said in a statement.
