How Patriots quarterbacks reacted to Jerod Mayo’s decision on starter
FOXBORO — At long last, the Patriots officially have a starting quarterback.
Starter Jacoby Brissett and rookie backup Drake Maye both met with reporters in the locker room after head coach Jerod Mayo announced the winner of the Patriots’ quarterback competition Thursday.
“Excited,” Brissett said Thursday at his locker. “Obviously, worked hard to get to this point. Excited for this journey that we’re about to embark on.”
Brissett, who took all of the first-team reps in training camp, said the quarterbacks met with Mayo on Thursday morning because “y’all (the media) wanted them to make an announcement.”
The Patriots were the last NFL team to name a starting QB.
“Excited for Week 1,” Maye said at his locker. “I think Jacoby is a great player. Excited to do whatever I can to help this team win.”
The rookie was asked if he was disappointed by Mayo’s decision.
“I wouldn’t say disappointed,” Maye said. “There’s two ways to look at it. Obviously, I want to play, the competitive edge in me. At the same time, I understand the situation. Jacoby has been in the offense and got reps with the 1s all camp … I feel like I left it all out there. No regrets.”
