Ford’s Quality Turnaround Is Starting to Pay Off After Years of Recall Troubles
Ford has spent much of the past several years trying to shake a reputation for quality problems and an unusually high number of recalls, and there are finally signs that the effort is producing meaningful results. The biggest proof point came in the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, where Ford ranked highest among mass-market brands. That is a dramatic turnaround for a company that sat much farther down the rankings just a few years ago and has been under intense pressure to improve the quality and durability of its vehicles.
A big part of the change comes down to when Ford chooses to attack a problem. According to reporting from Automotive News, the automaker has shifted away from relying so heavily on a traditional find-and-fix approach and is instead putting more effort into identifying defects before vehicles reach customers. Ford accelerated that strategy after costly quality problems surrounding the redesigned Super Duty lineup in 2023. Since then, the company has hired or promoted hundreds of technical specialists, including veteran engineers with deep experience in areas such as wiring, engines, manufacturing processes, and vehicle closures.
That added experience can pay off in surprisingly small but important ways. During Explorer testing, for example, Ford technical specialist Samuel Matt and his team identified a supplier-related problem with a liftgate closure component and corrected it before launch. Issues like that might seem minor during development, but once thousands of vehicles are on the road they can turn into warranty claims, frustrated owners, and potentially expensive recalls. Catching them before production is exactly the sort of behind-the-scenes work Ford hopes will prevent larger problems later.
Ford is also putting vehicles and components through tougher durability testing, with some programs designed to simulate as much as 15 years or 225,000 miles of use. Engineers are holding frequent problem-solving sessions, tracking defects through resolution, and conducting more detailed reviews before parts ever reach the assembly line. Automotive News has also reported that Ford more than doubled its ranks of technical specialists as part of the effort, giving experienced engineers a larger role in mandatory design reviews and early problem detection.
There is still plenty of work ahead. Ford continues to carry a heavy recall load in the United States, so the company is hardly in a position to declare the quality battle won. Still, the direction is encouraging. Moving from a lower-tier position in initial quality a few years ago to the top mass-market spot is difficult to ignore, particularly when it coincides with a broader effort to catch problems before customers ever experience them. If Ford can turn those early gains into consistently lower warranty costs, fewer recalls, and better long-term reliability, the changes taking place inside its engineering and manufacturing operations may prove to be one of the company’s most important turnarounds in years.
