Toyota is recalling 48,280 Tacoma pickups over a suspension issue that could cause the external oil reservoirs on their Bilstein shock absorbers to separate and fall onto the road. The campaign primarily covers certain 2024 and 2025 Tacoma TRD Off-Road models, which come standard with Bilstein dampers designed to provide additional control and cooling during more demanding off-road driving. The problem centers on a metal flange connecting the reservoir to the shock assembly. Over time, corrosion can weaken that connection enough for the reservoir to break free, potentially creating a road hazard for surrounding traffic.

According to Toyota’s investigation, a small untreated metal area between the reservoir, flange, and damper body can become vulnerable to corrosion, particularly when exposed to road salt, moisture, and damage from rocks or debris. Toyota began looking into the problem after receiving reports of leaking dampers in September 2025, including an inspection that found one truck was already missing its reservoir. Further analysis with Bilstein pointed to the flange design and environmental exposure as contributing factors. Toyota ultimately identified dozens of warranty claims and field reports connected to the issue before moving forward with the safety recall.

Owners of affected Tacomas will be asked to bring their trucks to an authorized Toyota dealer, where technicians will inspect the front and rear shock absorber assemblies. Any affected components will be replaced with improved parts at no charge. Toyota says owner notifications are expected by early October 2026, although Tacoma owners do not have to wait for a letter to check their trucks. Entering the vehicle’s VIN through Toyota’s recall website or the NHTSA recall database will confirm whether a particular Tacoma is included. For TRD Off-Road owners who regularly put their trucks through mud, rocks, winter road salt, and other conditions the suspension was designed to handle, this is one recall worth addressing sooner rather than later.
