Italy July 2026: Omoda/Jaecoo breaks records, Renault Clio up to #3

The Renault Clio is up 27.3% year-on-year in July.

The Italian new car market is solid again in July with sales up 3.9% year-on-year to 123,184 units. This leads the year-to-date up 8.9% to 1,060,175. This is however still -14.3% inferior to the same period in pre-pandemic 2019. Private sales beats the market again at +6.3% to 71,791 and 57.4% share vs. 56.4% a year ago (+11.4% to 53.3% YTD), self registrations edge up 0.4% to 18,092 and 14.5% share vs. 15% last year (+6.3% to 10.6% share YTD), long term leases drop -6.2% to 23,027 and 18.4% share vs. 20.4% in July 2025, short term rentals shoot up 143.7% to 4,211 and 3.4% share vs. 1.4% a year ago (+41.2% to 9.8% share YTD) and company sales edge down -0.7% to 7,880 and 6.3% share vs. 6.6% last year (+1.1% to 5.3% share YTD).

HEV sales are up 11.4% to 59,420 units and 47.5% share vs. 44.5% a year ago, including 21,406 full hybrids (+31.3%) and 38,014 mild hybrids (+2.7%). PHEVs soar 45.5% to 13,103 and 10.5% share vs. 7.5% in July 2025 and BEVs gain 24.9% to 7,368 and 5.9% share vs. 4.9% a year ago and 10.1% last month. This means rechargeable vehicles are up 37.4% to 20,471 and 16.4% share vs. 12.4% in July 2025 and 20.7% last month. Year-to-date, BEVs are up 71.4% to 86,991 and 8.1% share vs. 5.2% over the same period in 2025.

The Omoda 5 ranks #26 in Italy in July.

In the brands ranking, Fiat (+27.4%) vastly outpaces its home market to 11.4% share, its highest since last March. Toyota (+1.4%) is more discreet but stays at #2 ahead of Dacia (-1.6%) and Volkswagen (+0.9%), replicating the June Top 4. Renault (+10.8%) advances to #4 ahead of Audi (-2.2%) and BMW (-14.1%). Mercedes (+8.3%) is sturdy at #8, up two spots on June, but the hero of the Top 10 is once again BYD, up 127% year-on-year to 3.6% share and down one rank on last month to #10. Omoda+Jaecoo (+168.5%) does even better and reaches a record ranking (#13) and share (3.1%). Leapmotor (+202.9%) also makes itself noticed at #26. Tesla is down -77% to just 105 sales.

Model-wise, the Fiat Panda (+7.6%) climbs back up to 6.9% share, its highest since last February. The Dacia Sandero (+9.5%) confirms it has returned to its traditional 2nd place but still trails the Jeep Avenger (-26%) year-to-date at #3. The Renault Clio (+27.3%) is up 9 spots on last month to #3 vs. #9 so far this year. The Fiat Grande Panda (+170.9%) repeats at #4, a ranking it also holds year-to-date. The Citroen C3 (+46.2%), in fantastic shape, rounds out the Top 5 as it does year-to-date. The Toyota Aygo X (+47.7%) returns to the Top 10 at #10, with the Toyota Yaris (+3.7%) also up at #9 but the Dacia Duster (-26.3%) and Toyota Yaris Cross (-15.1%) both struggle. The Audi Q3 (+148.9%) reaches #15, its highest ranking since May 2024 and the Mercedes GLA (+69.9%) is up to #17 which is a new record for the nameplate (previous best #18 in December 2022). Up to #3 last month, the new BYD Atto 2 falls back to #20.
