France June 2026: BEVs up to 29.6% share, Renault Clio VI still not #1, Twingo IV up to #15
Can the Renault Twingo VI match the success of the Renault 5 at home?
A very satisfying month for new car sales in France: up 11.4% year-on-year in June to 188,787 units. However keep in mind June 2025 was the weakest in 28 years and we remain well below the 230,965 units of pre-pandemic June 2019. The market tilts into positive territory over H1 at +1.8% to 857,166. Petrol sales drop -23.7% to 28,807 and 15.3% share vs. 22.3% in June 2025, diesel is down -49.1% to 4,955 and 2.6% share vs. 5.7% a year ago, HEVs gain 12.3% to 83,445 and 44.2% share vs. 43.9% last year and PHEVs edge up 4.4% to 12,300 and 6.5% share vs. 7% in June 2025. Finally BEVs soar 91.7% to 55,851 and 29.6% vs. 17.2% a year ago and 29.1% last month. Year-to-date, BEV sales surge 62.5% to 241,565 and 28.2% share vs. 17.6% over H1 2025.
The Atto 2 lifts BYD to a record 11th place in France.
In the brands ranking, Renault (-0.9%) can’t capitalise on the market growth and falls to 17.2% share vs. 17.6% so far this year. This is a poor result given the brand is usually stronger in end-of-quarter months. Peugeot (+4.2%) is in positive but also trails the market and holds just 12% share, its lowest so far this year. Dacia (-1.2%) ranks #3 for the fourth month in a row, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date, overtaking Citroen (+9.8%). Volkswagen (-2.1%) and Toyota (+5.2%) follow like they do over H1. Tesla (+105%) lodges another surreal performance at #7 with 4% share. It distances BMW (+1.9%), Audi (+13.1%) and Skoda (+6.3%). Below, we have fantastic scores by BYD estimated to climb +366.3% to a record #11 and MG estimated to grow 94.7% to stay at #12. Fiat (+112.6%) also shines while newcomer Jaecoo is estimated to step up to a record #23 and Alpine (+164.6%) scores its maiden Top 25 finish at #25.
The Jaecoo 7 ranks at #53 in June.
Model-wise, the Peugeot 208 (+31.7%) surges ahead to remain in pole position, distancing the Dacia Sandero (+11.4%). The Renault Clio VI is up one spot on last month but at #3 it disappoints again, holding just 3.6% of its home market. At least when adding the 5th generation (-76.1% to #8), the Clio nameplate is #1 with 5.3% share. The jury is still out on whether the Clio VI can be called a flop – it is too early to say so. Meanwhile the Tesla Model Y (+105.1%) scores another very strong performance at #4 with 3.5% share and now ranks #6 year-to-date vs. #15 over the Full Year 2025. Excellent result also by the Citroen C3 (+16.4%) and Renault 5 (+48.9%). The Citroen C3 Aircross (+65.1%) repeats at a solid 12th place just as the Renault Twingo IV surges 21 ranks to #15, its first Top 20 finish. The Renault Scenic (+126.8%) and Megane E-Tech (+221%) are euphoric while the BYD Atto 2 (+6177.1%) spectacularly breaks into the Top 25 for the first time at #23.
Renault holds 30.2% of its home LCV market over H1 2026.
LCV sales drop -1.9% year-on-year over the First Half of 2026 to 181.853 units. Renault (+7.1%) defies the negative market and sees its share soar from 27.6% a year ago to 30.2%. In contrast Peugeot (-14.2%), Citroen (-5%) and Ford (-9.3%) all struggle. Volkswagen (+19.7%), Fiat (+11%) and Iveco (+6.2%) are the only additional gainers in the remainder of the Top 10. Model-wise, the Renault Trafic (-2.3%) holds onto the top spot but the Renault Kangoo III (+24.9%) and Master IV (+51.1%) are catching up fast. The Peugeot Expert (+3.8%) and Partner (-6.8%) round out the Top 5. The Renault 5 is up to #21, the Renault 4 lands at #44 (better than its PC ranking) and the Clio VI at #45. The Toyota Hilux (-57.6%) passes the Ford Ranger (-53.6%) to become the #1 pickup in France even though their booth crash, with the Isuzu D-Max (+14.3%) in tow.
