Spring Breakout roster showcases Red Sox player development transformation

The Red Sox will send a talented, but further from big-league-ready cohort of prospects to Sarasota for their Spring Breakout game against the Baltimore Orioles on March 20.

Last year Boston’s ‘Big Three’ prospects, Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony, all homered in the 7-5 Spring Breakout loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The trio made their respective major league debuts between Opening Day (Campbell) and the second week of June (Anthony), and Campbell and Anthony signed long-term extensions during the season.

This year’s Spring Breakout roster is more about looking down the road than at the immediate future. Six of Boston’s first seven draft picks last year are the list: righties Kyson Witherspoon (No. 15 overall), Marcus Phillips (No. 33, compensation pick), Anthony Eyanson (third round) and Leighton Finley (sixth round), and shortstops Henry Godbout (second round comp pick) and Mason White (fifth).

Several prospects are repeating, or even three-peating on the Spring Breakout roster, including outfielder Miguel Bleis, infielder Mikey Romero, second baseman Yoelin Cespedes, and Franklin Arias, the organization’s top shortstop prospect.

Catching prospect Johanfran Garcia, whose older brother Jhostynxon debuted for Boston last summer before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates during the offseason, is back on the roster after playing in the 2024 contest.

Though still technically prospect-eligible, lefties Payton Tolle and Connelly Early are not on the Spring Breakout roster after their respective regular-season and postseason debuts last year.

Even without Tolle and Early, the pitching-heavy group is an indication of how much has changed in the Red Sox organization since chief baseball officer Craig Breslow’s arrival in November 2023. This year’s Spring Breakout roster boasts 18 pitchers, a sharp increase from 13 last March and 10 in the inaugural contest the year before.

MLB plans to expand Spring Breakout to a single-elimination tournament format next year, with one champion crowned in the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues.
