WASHINGTON (AP) — El gobierno de Trump pidió el jueves a la Corte Suprema que le permita por ahora poner fin a las protecciones legales para migrantes de Siria, en la más reciente apelación de emergencia ante el máximo tribunal del país.
El Departamento de Justicia quiere que el tribunal deje sin efecto el fallo de un juez de Nueva York que detuvo la decisión del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de terminar el estatus de protección temporal para los sirios.
Un tribunal de apelaciones mantuvo vigente el fallo. Sin embargo, los magistrados ya han permitido anteriormente que las autoridades migratorias pongan fin a las protecciones legales para migrantes de Venezuela mientras las demandas siguen su curso. El gobierno federal argumentó que el caso de Siria es similar.
Unas 6.100 personas de Siria tienen estatus legal temporal tras huir del conflicto armado, según documentos judiciales. Poner fin a esas protecciones podría detener su autorización para trabajar legalmente en Estados Unidos y exponerlas a una posible deportación.
