Tom Mulherin’s high school hockey crystal ball
It all comes down to this, Hockeyland.
Only four days remain in the regular season before the madness of do-or-die season comes rolling in. But before it does, contenders are still jockeying for better seeding and a last taste of momentum heading into the state tournament.
This time of the year is always bittersweet. Hockey season feels like both a marathon and a blur. Its parity is thrilling and exhausting, and a blast to follow. Thank you to everyone that’s read along to find the games of the week.
Now, there’s just one more phase to go, and still a lot of hockey left. We set out in the preseason to finish as close to a .700 win-percentage as possible with less than a 2.00 average goal differential. Here’s the last go.
And yes, with the final week of the regular season upon us, there is an exception to the one-team-per-week restriction, as well as a season-high 19 games we’re highlighting with the stakes high.
LAST WEEK’S RECORD: 11-6
OVERALL RECORD: 86–41–12 (.662)
AVERAGE MARGIN: 2.02 goals
**WINNERS in ALL-CAPS**
BOYS
MONDAY
NORTH READING vs Monomoy/Mashpee (at Gallo Ice Arena), 4 p.m. — Two teams in the upper half of the MIAA power rankings in Div. 4. Hornets (10-6-1) have some big performances under their belt already, but a win here would be quality confidence boost to kick off the Jeff Hayes Memorial Tournament. The same goes for Monomoy/Mashpee (11-7), looking to add to wins in six of their last seven games.
DRACUT/TYNGSBORO at Nashoba, 8 p.m. — Dracut/Tyngsboro (15-1-2) has already taken a step forward by taking the MVC/DCL 3 from four-time reigning champion Methuen. This matchup between top-10 Div. 3 teams gives it a chance to take another, though Nashoba (12-4-2) has shown big-win potential recently by defeating Div. 4 power Dover-Sherborn/Weston.
TUESDAY
MILTON vs Billerica (at O’Brien Ice Rink), 2 p.m. — Second game of the Irish American Shootout is an intriguing Div. 2 battle. The defending state champion Indians (8-8-2) can finish the regular season above .500 and maybe crack the top 10 of the MIAA power rankings by taking the tournament, which also includes reigning state semifinalist Woburn. Milton (10-8-1) has struggled as of late by dropping four of its five. A win puts its back in the right direction as a legit contender.
Methuen at SHAWSHEEN, 4 p.m. — The regular season finale for both carries Div. 3 implications. Shawsheen (16-2-1) ranks No. 5 in the latest power rankings. Methuen (14-4-1) ranks No. 9. This is a rematch of the Rams’ 6-0 win earlier this season, which is their only top-10 win of the year so far. Big boost either way here.

WEDNESDAY
Arlington Catholic vs ARCHBISHOP WILLIAMS (at Falmouth Ice Arena), noon – The Buddy Ferreira Classic has been exceptional through two rounds, and now the final day kicks off with a third head-to-head between strong Catholic Central League foes. Last chance at some momentum before the tournament for these Div. 1 threats. Arlington Catholic beat Archbishop Williams in both regular-season matchups, but a third is always dangerous.
Marshfield at XAVERIAN, 3:30 p.m. — Marshfield (14-5-1) has been hot as of late, winning four of its last five against quality teams to round into postseason form. Div. 1 power Xaverian (14-4) is an ultimate final test, which comes off another challenge against a surging Natick on Monday.
READING vs BC High, 6 p.m. (at Falmouth Ice Arena) — Public versus private for the Buddy Ferreira Classic championship. BC High (9-9-1) has been stellar outside of the Catholic Conference this year (6-2-1) as a legitimate threat despite its record. Reading (16-2-2) is one win away from the best closeout to a regular season it’s had in years, currently on an eight-game unbeaten streak.
Barnstable at WEYMOUTH, 7 p.m. — No outside narrative to this one, just a strong nonleague battle between Div. 1 and Div. 2 contenders. Both rank in their respective top 10, and both feature goaltenders that have stolen the show quite a few times. Should be a barn burner.
King Philip at NATICK, 7:40 p.m. — See directly above. Natick (9-8-2) doesn’t rank as well as King Philip (12-4-2, No. 10 in Div. 2), but the RedHawks are one of the state’s hottest teams as winners in six of their last seven games. A win here for Natick would be yet another big lift after playing Xaverian on Monday, but KP could flex its strength as a Div. 2 threat here.
THURSDAY
Abington at NORWELL, 1 p.m. — Middleboro/Carver/Wareham’s claim to an outright South Shore League title comes down to this. If Norwell (11-5-2) wins, they share it. Abington (10-8) can do the Sachems a solid with a win or a tie. Either way, this is another quality league matchup between Div. 4 teams that figure to make some noise in the tournament. Clippers will be fired up coming off a tie with Div. 3 force Nauset.
GIRLS
MONDAY
St. Mary’s (L) at ARCHBISHOP WILLIAMS, 3 p.m. — A winner-take-all in the Catholic Central League, a mighty league title to take considering how loaded the CCL is with Div. 1 state title contenders this year. Archbishop Williams (12-6-1) has won five straight to put itself in this position, trailing St. Mary’s (15-2-2) by just one point in the league standings. These two tied in the first matchup, another would give the Spartans the title. And outside of the league race, both teams rank in the MIAA power rankings’ top five for an elite matchup.
TUESDAY
DUXBURY at Milton, 3 p.m. — The Tenney Cup back in December gave us an indication of which contenders had an early edge. This one will give us a clearer picture ahead of the state tournament. Both Duxbury (14-6-1) and Milton (18-1-1) rank in the top four of the power rankings, and this very well could be a Final Four preview. The Dragons won Round 1, 3-1, so the Wildcats will be hungry for revenge.
HINGHAM at Archbishop Williams, 3 p.m. — Archies gets another crack at the defending Div. 1 state champs after Hingham (15-3-1) topped it in overtime in the Tenney Cup. The Bishops are healthier now for a stronger fight, though the Harborwomen are in a groove with a seven-game win streak.
MALDEN CATHOLIC vs Natick, 4 p.m. — Malden Catholic’s 7-9-2 record isn’t indicative of its strength — all but one of the 11 games it hasn’t won came to top-10 ranked teams and it’s been in almost every one. Natick (11-7-2) boasts one of the state’s stingiest defenses and goaltenders and has won its last three. Quality matchup in the first round of the Malden Catholic Showcase. Winner gets St. Mary’s or Reading in the championship on Thursday.
WEDNESDAY
Hingham at WESTWOOD, 1 p.m. — Westwood (17-1) has rolled since losing 4-1 to Hingham earlier this year, averaging 3.62 goals per game in a 13-game unbeaten streak. The Harborwomen are the only team to post more than a goal against it, helping the Wolverines again rank No. 1 in the latest Div. 2 power rankings. A notable rematch.
ALGONQUIN at Bishop Feehan, 4:30 p.m. — Unbeaten Algonquin (19-0) made a statement with a 2-1 win over No. 1 NDA (H) on Saturday in its first matchup against a top-10 team. Now it gets a Shamrocks (13-7) team that’s won 11 of their last 13 despite facing one of the state’s toughest schedules. A potential Div. 1 Final Four preview to monitor.
Brianna McCarthy Memorial Tournament final, TBD — Details aren’t finalized yet, but the championship to this tournament has potential as a matchup to watch out for. Unbeaten Methuen/Tewksbury (16-0-2) faces Longmeadow in the first round, while Shawsheen/Bedford/Lowell (11-7) plays Arlington Catholic (8-8-2). Arlington Catholic has been in every game against the best of the loaded Catholic Central League and could be a major threat to the Red Rangers’ unbeaten record if the two match up.
THURSDAY
KING PHILIP at Sandwich, 1:30 p.m. — King Philip head coach Ken Assad’s tragic and unexpected passing earlier this year hit the hockey community hard, including Sandwich head coach Billy Ferreira. The two go way back, becoming friends after Assad scored the overtime game-winner for Franklin against Ferreira’s Falmouth team in the 1983 Div. 1 state championship at TD Garden. It’s been a bit of a tradition for the two coaches to close out the year against one another, a game Ferreira always looked forward to. Not only is this one a matchup of Div. 2 threats, but Sandwich has dedicated the contest as the “Coach Assad Game” in an emotional tribute.
