White House border official Tom Homan announces the conclusion of Operation Metro Surge

FORT SNELLING — White House border official Tom Homan announced the end to Operation Metro Surge on Thursday.

At a press conference at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Fort Snelling, Homan said the operation has “yielded the successful results” the administration came to Minnesota for, noting enhanced local cooperation, a decrease in “unlawful agitator activity” and removing “public safety threats off the street.”

“Twin Cities and Minnesota in general are and will continue to be much safer for the communities here because of what we have accomplished under President Trump’s leadership,” Homan said.

Gov. Tim Walz came out earlier in the week and said he expected Homan to announce a further drawdown based on his recent conversations with Homan and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Walz is set to hold a press conference at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, announcing a relief package for those impacted by federal immigration operations in the state.

“It would be my hope that (Border Czar Tom) Homan goes out before Friday and announces that this thing is done,” Walz said at a news conference Tuesday discussing economic impacts of Operation Metro Surge.

Homan has previously said he intended to reach a complete drawdown of the roughly 2,000 federal agents remaining in the state, but that was contingent on continued state and local cooperation. Operation Metro Surge began on Dec. 1 and has resulted in the fatal shooting of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, drawing national scrutiny of federal immigration operations.
