Amtrak suspends service between NYC and Boston, no estimated time of restoration

All Amtrak service between Boston and New York City has been suspended, without any estimated time of restoration, due to “overhead power issues” as 750,000 people between the two cities rely on the rail service every day.

“Amtrak services operating between New York (NYP) and New Haven (NHV) are canceled for the remainder of the evening due to a loss of overhead power. Customers traveling between New York (NYP) and Boston (BOS) may rebook for another day using our Fare Protect feature, which allows customers to change their ticket at no additional charge or request a full refund,” said Amtrak Northeast in a press release issued at 7pm Wednesday. “Crews are currently assessing the issue and working toward a resolution, however, we do not yet have an estimated time for service restoration.”

The rail service for Amtrak’s northeast corridor, which runs from Boston to Washington, D.C., has posted several alerts to its official X page informing riders of numerous cancelled trains. Amtrak says it has secured mutual aid from the Metro North Railroad for customers traveling east between New Haven and Grand Central Station. There is no backup service available for customers in Boston, Providence and eastern Connecticut.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the “heavily traveled” northeast corridor is Amtrak’s busiest route, with over 750,000 daily customers between Boston and the Big Apple.

A media spokesperson for Amtrak Northeast referred the Herald to the press release issued early Wednesday night. No further information, including if service is expected to remain suspended into Thursday morning, has been released by Amtrak as of the filing of this report.
