Police Blotter: Suspect in fatal double shooting at Carver kids party arraigned

A man accused of killing two people and injuring two others at a child’s birthday over the weekend in Carver allegedly called police on himself before being arrested.

Nicholas Meuse, 23, was arraigned on two counts each of murder, attempted murder, and armed assault to murder, as well as multiple gun charges at Wareham District Court Tuesday.

Meuse was held without bail and is due back in court Feb. 25 for a probable cause hearing.

According to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, Meuse shot and killed Benjamin Cowart, 27, and Jalen Pina, 20, at a children’s birthday party at the Saint John the Baptist Club Saturday night. Two other male victims, a 32- and 38-year-old, were also injured and taken to local hospitals.

The DA said that Meuse called 911 immediately after the incident and told dispatchers he was the shooter. After he was arrested in the woods near the club and taken into custody, Meuse told police that he’d been invited to the party by a relative despite on-going conflicts with some of the other attendees.

“Tensions flared up” after Meuse arrived at the party, a statement from the DA said, leading to the shooting.

Meuse told police that he’d seen someone grab for something in their waistband, the DA said, but investigators only found one gun, a 9 mm with a scratched out serial number, at the scene.
