Lucas: Trump is living rent-free in Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey’s head
Gov. Maura Healey ought to challenge President Donald Trump to a debate.
While he may not recall who Healey is, it is obvious that Trump is living rent-free in Healey’s head.
But he might remember that she sued him one hundred times during his first term when she was attorney general and would sue him a hundred times more if she could. It’s a fixation.
So, the only way to clear her head is to meet the president face-to-face, mano-a-mano, so to speak, and straighten things out. It would be like an intervention.
It won’t happen, of course, but such a meeting could work wonders.
It worked for Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a fellow Democrat critic of Trump who met with him and it greatly benefited her state economically.
Whitmer was a strong Joe Biden supporter, as was Healey, and was chosen to give the party’s response to Trump’s state of the union address in his first term
Since talking with Trump and making nice with him, Trump approved an $850 million windfall for the state that rescued an airbase and six hundred jobs, and also backed a program to save the fish in Lake Michigan.
Trump also appointed Whitmer to the Council of Governors, a bipartisan group of ten governors who work with the federal government on critical national issues like homeland security and National Guard operations.
There was a time when Whitmer, like foppish California Gov. Gavin Newson, could not put two sentences together without attacking Trump.
That’s Healey today, a broken record. If something is not working, it is Trump’s fault.
It’s like listening to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu whine about the Massachusetts Legislature not giving her what she wants. Enough already.
Just do your job, as Bill Belichick used to say.
Trump, not her, Healey says, is to blame for everything, even though she has been governor for almost four years.
Take for example her announcement about seeking reelection the other day. Healey said, “These are tough times and Donald Trump is making everything worse.”
She liked the line so much she repeated it in her “State of the State” speech Thursday night before a packed audience in the chamber of the Massachusetts House.
But, given her plan to make Trump her 2026 opponent rather than the Republican who will run against her, Healey has twisted her attacks on Trump into insult and mockery.
Talking about high cost of living in Massachusetts, Healey said, “Washington is only making it worse. We have president who throws tantrums like a two-year-old. And I’m sorry to all the two-year-olds out there.”
She also went after Trump on ICE, emotionally repeating less than accurate information about what ICE has been doing in its campaign to rid the country of criminal illegal immigrants.
One would have thought that it was Trump, and not Joe Biden, who opened the borders to the illegal immigrant invasion that overwhelmed her administration, costing the taxpayers billions while destabilizing Massachusetts.
But there was no mention of any of that.
Healey’s problem is that she has no Democrats to praise. Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, all of whom she supported, are all pathetic losers. The only winner around is Donald Trump.
So, she takes her envy, hate and frustration out on him, hoping that dragging him down will raise her up.
It might work. Healey may be reelected. But Trump will still be around. So good luck with that.
